Seems like everybody’s got a price,
I wonder how they sleep at night
When the sale comes first
And the truth comes second.

Hmm . . . I guess we can call it a draw.
Last week, World Vision U.S.A. rescinded a decision to hire gay people after an uproar by anti-gay evangelical types, who did what so many consumers do when they are peeved off with a company: threatened to boycott it and withdraw financial support.
This week, after an uproar by LGBT people — also threatening a boycott — upset about his $1,000 contribution to anti-gay Proposition 8 efforts in California in 2008, Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich has reportedly stepped down. (See my earlier post called Brendan Eich entitled to his personal views.)
In both cases, it was “for the good of the company.”
Translation: For the bottom line. Money.
Truly a statement of modern times, yes?
And of times gone by.
Who was it that said “money is the root of all evil”?
Though, in both cases, I bet there are people who will say money — and the threat of withdrawing money — was used wisely to dissuade those who initially acted on their principles.
Hey, I’m being objective here. I’m not judging anybody.
So, score one for the anti-LGBT crowd in the United States last week. And score one for the LGBT crowd this week.
And score two for the real god of this planet: Money — as impersonal as the other one “by which people measure their pain,” as John Lennon sang.
There are so many songs we could spin at this point. Here’s one I’m listening to:

I think you are wrong about Brendan Eich. Take Prop 8 and the LGBT community completely out of the equation. Would you feel the same about Brendan Eich if he had supported a white supremacy group with a $1000 contribution? Would he still be qualified in your opinion to run Mozilla?

Am thinking about your questions . . . I’m trying not to judge people. I think he should be entitled to his personal principles and opinions, even if I disagree with them.
I do worry sometimes about LGBT people becoming as bigoted as the people are who persecute us. Will write a post about it.

BTW – thanks for the link to the music video by Carly Rae Jepsen. As an old fart, I had never heard of her, but in this curmudgeon’s opinion, she is good, really, realy good.
