(As posted to my Gazette blog on Thursday)
The Sudanese woman sentenced to be whipped and hanged simply because she is a Christian will have another day in court. She has launched an appeal of the conviction, which has drawn international criticism.
Meanwhile, the man who denounced Meriam Ibrahim in the first place — her brother, one Al Samani Al Hadi Mohamed Abdullah — reportedly said in a CNN interview that he did it because his family are “Muslim people,” according to a report on The Telegraph site. And that she should be hanged if she doesn’t renounce Christianity and become a Muslim.
And furthermore, he reportedly said, she was “given a magic potion” to bewitch her into leaving Islam . . .
Hmm . . . You think maybe Sudan would like this guy to keep his mouth shut before he embarrasses his country anymore and makes it the laughingstock of the universe?
But, let’s humour him for a minute: if the “magic potion” is to blame, how could they even consider a death sentence? And if . . . no, never mind. I don’t want to go down this particular rabbit hole . . .
Meanwhile, I’m wondering if the brother might find himself sentenced to be whipped and hanged before all is said and done?
Nothing would surprise me.
Let’s hope Meriam is freed soon, and allowed to leave Sudan.
I think I will look up an old Searchers song on YouTube . . . Love Potion No. 9 . . . and “start kissing everything in sight . . . “
