HeForShe: Calling all men in support of women

I’ve just been watching an inspiring video of Emma Watson’s impassioned address to the United Nations on Sept. 20 about the HeForShe campaign. Emma is a UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador.

The campaign is described on Wikipedia as a “solidarity movement for gender equality that brings together one half of humanity in support of the other of humanity, for the entirety of humanity . . . and aims to put men at the center of activism and dialogue to end persistent inequalities faced by women and girls around the world.”

The campaign has a website, at heforshe.org, where you can sign a declaration that says:

The HeForShe Commitment

Gender equality is not only a women’s issue, it is a human rights issue that requires my participation. I commit to take action against all forms of violence and discrimination faced by women and girls.

So, guys, please go to the site, learn more about it, and sign the declaration showing your support for the movement for gender equality.

And watch the video above for Emma’s message.

Thank you.

  1. As a male, it’s a shame to have to join this campaign. What kind of world are we creating when you have to make clear that you support gender equality?

Sadly, this little gesture can only show women that they are not alone in this, but it will not really have any significant effect unless we all stop accepting inequality in our everyday life. No more laughs at sexist jokes. No more silence when women are not promoted at work. No more support to politicians that don’t fight discrimination.
