There has been a lot of talk recently about the possibility of a nuclear conflict between the United States and Russia. There was even a poll on Twitter the other day — offered by a mainstream media outlet in the U.S. — asking which country might emerge the winner from such a war between the two superpowers.
My answer: no one would win. Everybody would lose.
It is possible, indeed, probable that all the war talk is propaganda associated with the U.S. presidential election. But it is also possible that the U.S. might be seen as vulnerable right now because of the chaos associated with its presidential election — and its perceived weakness — and its enemies might see this as an opportune time to strike it.
Of course, nuclear war would profit no one — not even the weapons makers, because civilization as we know it now in North America, Russia and much of Europe would be over. It was Einstein who said World War IV would be fought with sticks and stones . . . if there is anyone left to fight that war.
So, if we are on the eve of World War III, is there any point in stocking up your pantry now, just in case? Would there be any point in building a bomb shelter or . . . well, you get the point. Is there anything one can do in hopes of riding out the nuclear storm?

Wow, I thought Fox “News” stopped broadcasting in Canada. I must have misheard and you must be still listening to them.
Fox “news” and their insane right wing promote fear and anxiety. It is their bread and butter. If people had a positive outlook on life, fox news and their legion of sheep would not have a reason to exist. There mere existence depends on promoting unreasonable fear and hatred.
WW-III is not right around the corner. The gold peddlers and doomsday supply companies only advertise on Fox “news” because their low-intelligence audience are stupid enough to buy their crap. Of course they *want* you to think nuclear armageddon is coming so you will buy their survival crap. Have you never heard “a fool and his money are easily parted”?
What *could* happen, though unlikely, is one of the apocalyptic cults getting their hands on a tactical nuke. They probably wouldn’t have the knowledge needed to actually detonate it but they would be able to take it apart to get the nuclear material inside and use it on a dirty bomb. But, contrary to what the Fox “news” people want you to believe, getting a dirty bomb into the U.S. or any western country would be next to impossible. Security is so tight an old radium-faced clock would set off alarms, let alone a few pounds of fissile material.
As I’ve said countless times, you worry too much.

Small point: It’s not just Fox that’s talking about this. All the major networks and news outlets are hot with it (except CNN which can’t seem to tear itself away from ‘Breaking News’ about Trump’s latest mouthings).
But I do agree that at least some of the fuss is overplayed to build audience. As you suggest, a limited action is more likely than full-scale war. There are a number of issues involved which are causing this saber rattling, but I doubt that either Russia or the US would destroy themselves over it.
The UK is the one to watch right now. A shooting war may very well begin between them and Russia over Syria, and that would bring others into the fray.
