Bad forest management or climate change?
Does it really matter anymore?
It’s a no-brainer, of course, but even if President Donald Trump agreed that the fires sweeping parts of the American West are the result of climate change, there’s little or nothing he can do about it now.
The apocalypse is here for millions of Americans.
A New York Times piece today paints a grim picture for the next few decades. As many as 200 million Americans will be forced to migrate as coastal regions are flooded and searing temperatures make places like California inhospitable to humans.
So, where will all those Americans go?
Speaking from his smoky hilltop in California, former governor Gerry Brown was asked where he might go.
Hello, Canada.
It’s inevitable.
Canada will seem like the promised land for Americans seeking fresh water and relief from the heat. And they will take Canada by force, if they have to.
But it won’t come to that. Being a polite and practical people, Canadians will understand that they have no choice in the matter. There will be no war.
And in time, after 100 million or so Americans have settled across the country, the name “Canada” may disappear from modern maps.
Of course, climate change is affecting Canada, too. So it may be a temporary respite for desperate Americans who come here.
Man has never been good at looking at the long-term picture. Hence, the mess we’re all in now.
The Twitterites will keep nattering about mundane issues while masses of people migrate and billions die of starvation around the world.

Does that mean that my wife and I won’t be welcome there? We have seriously considered Canada on our list of places we would like to consider retiring to in a couple of years, but if the Orange Apocalypse gets re-elected this November, we may want to move Canada to the top of the list. And sooner as well.

But, nah! While I think I understand your
twist of humour, I disagree in general with your invasion theory.
If you didn’t read it back in the day, review Richard Rhomer’s “Ultimatum and Exxoneration” if they didn’t do it over oil, they should’t do it over environmental concerns, particularly since the president discounts the greatest threat of all.
The whole topic of Global Warming, in all it’s aspects with all it’s causes and effects is far to complicated and scary to talk about in this forum.
I take heart in a comment I heard by an indigenous writer and (thoughtful) film director who I think had a film at TIFF.
“We consider the Earth as a living entity, in it’s own way living, sustaining itself.
Imagine the earth as a dog with we, as parasitic bugs (fleas lets say). The dog, when it’s had enough and can’t take more is sick, it will finally just shake us off, will heal itself without us and regrow another pest, in another millenium.”

I totally agree with the Earth as a living entity, as is the whole universe. The Earth is shaking us off right now, and people will flea, er, flee to anywhere they can find relief. As mentioned, it won’t be a violent invasion. It will be a migration, in my opinion.

And those who believe the cultural and religious gap is a good reason to turn away climate refugees from middle eastern countries will gladly welcome Americans without even asking where they stand…
