As they say, the people have spoken . . .
And now, I suspect, many of my American readers are toasting the president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden, and the vice-president-elect, Kamala Harris.
I stayed up till 2 a.m. on election night and went to bed thinking Donald Trump was on the verge of winning a second term — given that he was leading in so many states.
When I got up the next morning, the picture had changed: Biden was gaining and from that point on it seemed like he would win it.
When all is said and done, Biden will probably have 306 electoral college votes, giving him a convincing victory — convincing to all but the most diehard Trump supporters. I’m already seeing conservative writers who supported Trump offering their congratulations to the Biden team and pledging their support.
That’s heartwarming. And it gives me hope for the immediate future of America.
So, congratulations to ALL Americans who took part in the democratic process, no matter who you voted for.
God bless, America.

A breath of fresh air!
My personal feeling is the the division the country is experiencing is more dangerous to democracy and human rights than any of the issues we are divided over. I do not ascribe all the shortcomings of a candidate to the people who voted for them. Almost half the country voted for the loser. They are not all xenophobic narcissists. Nor do I automatically ascribe virtue and understanding to those who supported the winner.
That kind of polarized world-view does not leave us a path forward, only ever increasing discord until it all falls apart.
