Does anyone besides Nancy Pelosi truly think impeaching Donald Trump again is a smart move now?
Yes, he may deserve it — and much more. But with less that two weeks to go before Joe Biden is sworn in as U.S. president, is it worth getting Trump’s base all riled up again? Is it worth losing more lives?
Trump seems to be somewhat contrite now in the aftermath of the Capitol incident and the deaths of five people. He has finally acknowledged Biden’s victory, has pledged a “smooth transition” and says he will not attend the inauguration ceremony.
The wise thing for Trump now would be to resign. But if he doesn’t and he feels any more cornered and isolated than he does now, he may be more unpredictable than ever.
The smart thing, in my view, is to let him finish his term, and let the Justice Department do its work afterward.
Agree or disagree?

For those wondering if it’s worth impeaching him this time, it means he:
1) loses his 200k+ pension for the rest of his life
2) loses his 1 million dollars/year travel allowance
3) loses lifetime full secret service detail
4) loses his ability to run in 2024
….. come on down and run around naked with me on my land…… even in the winter!…. oh, okay….. you may walk!! ….

Yes, Jillian, he needs to be impeached. Even if the Senate doesn’t take it up for trial.
Why?
The Constitution gives the president the power “to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of impeachment.”
If he is impeached then his self-pardon will be short-circuited and he can be prosecuted for sedition.
Otherwise Trump and his cult can try again in 2024.

I agree. Did you know that you can impeach someone after they have left office?
Doing it right now is going to tie up the Congress which needs to be doing other things right now. I cannot imagine them getting through it before his term is up, even with Democrats holding both houses and a couple of additional Republicans on their side. You need to impeach first and then try in the Senate for a conviction.
Nobody has ever tested the question of whether he can pardon himself but I bet he’ll fill out the paperwork faster than Congress can act. I don’t think it matters. He cannot pardon himself in private civil and state criminal cases. I would imagine there’d be a few of those. He would be too busy fighting those off to be very active on the political stage.
I think the best possible result would be for his own people to take him out with the 25th amendment before he could pardon himself. (I know, not likely.) Then Congress can impeach him at leisure so he can never hold any public office.
There is a legitimate concern about creating a martyr for a cause. We have to understand that Trump is not the illness. He’s just a symptom of a deeper national malaise infecting about a third of the population.

I read in today’s paper that they might delay the actual vote to impeach until after Biden’s first 100 days. This would eliminate the self-pardon issue while giving Biden time to get things done.

Donald Trump…….. Apart from being a criminal, the man is and always has been a classic bully.
He must be treated as such, it’s common knowledge how bullies need to be neutralized, stand up to them and stand up in unison.
Give no quarter, accuse to full extent of knowledge, convict and punish to FULL extent of the law ….. done!
Pride, justice, strength, honesty and truth.
Throw him out now, the resulting long term boost for the ultimate global respect , self respect and admiration of the U.S. Democracy will supersede any potential, temporary pain and disruption.
This one is easy!

I agree with you and others voicing that opinion. And everybody is standing up to him, it seems, from politicians to social media platforms et al. Something good may come of all this.
