A CBC News article today voiced what many observers have suspected for a while now: the Trudeau government plan to legalize recreational cannabis by July 1, 2018 might not happen because the bill is likely to be held up in the stubborn Senate — which many people feel is a complete waste of taypayers’ money — for a long time.

Indeed, if the Conservative part of the Senate has its way, the bill may never get through as it is. It could be modified and sent back to the House, then punted back to the Senate, which could continue to hold it up.

In other words, Canadians should not be expecting to see recreational pot for sale legally next year, and maybe not even the year afterward.

But Justin Trudeau can say he kept his promise. And he can point to the Senate as the bad guys.

Meanwhile, millions of dollars in investments will be lost in the corporate world as a result.

But, hey, the black market folks will be happy. And your neighbourhood pot dealer will keep laughing all the way to the bank.

Conspiracy theories, anyone? Did anybody really think that governments could wrest control of pot away from the tax-free crowd? Did anyone really think that governments truly had the desire to do so?

P.S. Prediction: Pot stocks will collapse in Canada if recreational weed is not legalized by July 1, 2018, and a lot of people are going to lose a lot of money.
