I had to laugh when I saw that headline on google’s news page today. It was a link to a New York Times story: A ‘Cruel’ Turnabout for the Bruins. The “cruel” word came from Bruins defenceman Andrew Ference; the headline from a copy editor, no doubt.
Excuse me, but what is so cruel about losing in the dying minutes of the game last night? There was nothing cruel about it; the Blackhawks were just doing what they were supposed to do — score goals. They weren’t being unnecessarily mean. As anyone who knows even the slightest bit about hockey can tell you — and ALL Canadians know about hockey because it is in our blood — the Bruins’ loss just goes to show yet again that a team needs to play a full 60 minutes, not 58 minutes. The Bruins were clinging to the slenderest of leads (2-1) in a do-or-die hockey game. And they blew it. Nothing cruel about it. The Hawks were simply the better team. C’est la vie . . .
Disclosure: I was rooting for the Bruins (even if I’m a Canadiens fan). I shook my head after the game and said the “F” word several times. But life goes on . . .
OK, hockey commentary over. Thank God the season is finally finished.
Let summer begin!
