Those are the closing words of a good and somewhat touching column by David A. Love on thegrio.com, commenting on the president’s remarks yesterday about gun violence in the United States.
He points out that the president is largely helpless to stop gun violence in the United States. He can’t wave a magic wand and make it all better.
He points out the “lack of political will to solve the problem.”
He points out that most mass murders in the United States are committed by white people, and that suicide is more prevalent among whites.
He points out a lot more — yes, including the profits reaped by gun manufacturers.
We’ve talked here before about gun control in the U.S., the lack thereof, and the supposed right and debatable need to bear arms. I’ve been on both sides of the issue — yes, sometimes a devil’s advocate, too.
Today, I’m neutral and am asking you: Do you feel America has an “unhealthy gun culture”? (Yes, it might seem to be a dumb question to many people, but I have to ask.)
What can and/or should America do to cure its “unhealthy gun culture”?
Or is curing it at this point an impossible dream?

Every time Politicians talk gun control, guns start flying off the shelves, Obama being the best gun salesman of all time.

There are a lot of other things killing more children and adults than guns. The problem, the media only talks about the guns.

I would suggest that if you intend to travel to the USA that you invest in a bullet-proof vest. Apparently there is an apparel manufacturer that makes them such that they are as light as regular clothing and you cannot tell if you are wearing one. I am sure there are celebrities and politicians who wear them as well. While at the moment they are pricey, it wouldn’t surprise me that they will decrease in price as sales ramp up. Guns are not the only item which will be selling like hotcakes. And remember that you will be as equipped as the bad guys and the SWAT teams; who are just as trigger-happy as the rest. Warped and serious %O

If you blame guns for killing people, then you have to blame forks for making people fat. It’s the same stupid logic. It’s already illegal to murder anybody with a gun… or with anything else, for that matter. It’s already against the law to possess marijuana, crack cocaine, or methamphetamine. So if they make it against the law to own a gun, only the criminals with have ’em. And it will be a cold day in hell before I believe that Barry Soetoro (a.k.a. “Barak Hussein Obama”) says or does anything with our best interest in mind.

Sorry, I feel expressions like “guns don’t kill people – people kill people” and “If you make carrying a gun illegal then only criminals would be carrying them” are silly. Yes, guns are used to kill people. Gang members don’t carry guns as a fashion statement. They carry them to kill people. Terrorists also use guns to kill people. I’d rather make it harder for criminals, terrorists and those mentally unbalanced gain access to guns. By guns I mean handguns. Rifles and shotguns are used for hunting but, outside target practice, handguns’ purpose is to kill people for those so inclined.

America’s ‘gun culture’ can’t be fixed…that train left the station ages ago. We are a nation founded in violence, expanded in violence and obsessed with guns and violence. We’ve had more people killed with gun violence than in all our wars combined–significant since we’ve spent at least 90% of our national history at war. Funny thing, Americans obsess about ‘terrorism’ when the real threat (and deaths) are from fellow Americans slaughtering each other. Mass shootings are so routine these days that everyone simply yawns…then get back to being afraid of the Jihadists who pose very little threat to any of us by comparison.
